The history of French Tablecloths
The history of fabric production in Provence lies back in the 16th century when colorful printed cottons were shipped to Marseille from India.
Very popular, they were banned in 1686 as other French textile manufacturers complained about the competition. Provence merchants moved their factories to a nearby papal state within French borders (where those rules did not apply) to make replicas of the Indian materials.
Once the ban was lifted, more factories emerged and regional Provencal emblems were introduced, creating the iconic Provence tablecloths we know today.
Today, the textiles are as popular as ever, with Provencal tablecloths being the perfect souvenir for many tourists and can be found on the tables of the most popular restaurants in Southern France. Tablecloths made in France are a guarantee of quality, using the finest cotton and mostly hand labor in small family owned workshops.
The History of Marseille Soap
The origin of Savon de Marseille comes from Aleppo soap, which has existed for thousands of years and was originally made in Aleppo, Syria.
Olive oil and laurel oil have always been base ingredients for this type of soap and this method spread throughout the Mediterranean over the centuries, finally reaching Marseille during the Crusades.
Over the years Marseille Soap has become more and more popular and has a mean to protect their craftsmanship, local workshops have worked to create a certified label insuring Marseille soap factories stay in Marseille.
Nowadays Marseille soap is known all over the world and revered for its quality and multiple usage as Marseille soap is not only used for bathing or handwashing but can also be used for dishwashing and laundry.
