Marseille Soap
How to Spot Real Savon de Marseille
"Savon de Marseille" isn’t a protected label. That means anyone can use the name, even if the soap isn’t made in Marseille. In fact, many colorful soaps sold online are mass-produced elsewhere. To make sure you're buying the real thing, here’s what to look for:
- Ingredients: Only three—vegetable oils (like olive), lye, and salt water. No additives, perfumes, or chemicals.
- Color & Shape: Authentic soap comes in olive green, beige, or brown—never bright colors. It's usually a simple cube or bar.
- Stamp: Look for “72% HUILE” stamped on the soap. Some may also carry the new “Savon de Marseille” logo from the four traditional makers.
- Scent: Real soap smells mild—mostly of olive oil. Strong perfumes = fake.
- Feel: Gentle, pure, and soothing. It shouldn’t irritate your skin or eyes.
